Stepping Up for Veterans

13 Dec

Between 2011 and 2017, some 24,400 veterans will return from Iraq and Afghanistan. That has many groups asking what we can do to support our soldiers when they return home. Unfortunately, the employment landscape for veterans isn’t looking great.

A recent report commissioned by the United Way of Greater Los Angeles details veterans’ employment rates and other indicators of well-being. Los Angeles County’s 328,000 veterans experience high rates of unemployment. This is especially true for those who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan, whose unemployment levels reached 18.8% in 2012.

The high unemployment rate is surprising given the fact that many veterans received world-class training across diverse disciplines. The report notes that the ability to leverage these skills will build a stronger workforce and a more competitive economy.

As we continue to think about new ways to connect workers to good jobs, we cannot overlook this pool of highly-skilled individuals.
