The US Environmental Protection Agency announced its 2012 National Award for Smart Growth Achievement winners. Lancaster, California received the Agency’s Overall Excellence Award for its rehabilitation of a downtown commercial corridor.

The city transformed Lancaster Boulevard from an under-performing, high vacancy street to a bustling mixed-use corridor that boasts more than 110,000 square feet of commercial space, a new park and museum, and more than 800 low- to moderate-income apartments and condos that are within walking distance of downtown. The “BLVD Transformation” has yielded 48 new locally owned businesses and over 1,900 jobs.

Other award recipients include the Cooperative Building in Brattleboro, Vermont; the Destination Portsmouth Program in Portsmouth, Virginia; and the The Mariposa District in Denver, Colorado.
