A student report [PDF] that examines how to leverage the regional economic impact of the planned construction of a second campus of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in the East Bay of San Francisco has won the Academic Award for the 2012 California Northern Section of the American Planning Association.

Laura Adler, Whitney Berry, Matt Chwierut, Jenny Gant, Michael Katz, Karla Kingsley, Noé Noyola, Ezra Pincus-Roth, Chris Schildt and Michelle Thong produced the impact analysis as Master’s students in the Sustainable Economic Development Studio at UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design.

They analyzed the biosciences industry, reviewed how the LBNL currently affects the East Bay’s economy, and recommended strategies for cities to maximize the economic development potential of a second LBNL campus by actively fostering a regional bioscience cluster.

Professors Karen Chapple and Cecilia Estolano were co-instructors of the studio.  The LBNL Economic Development report will now compete for an award at the state level for APA California.
